Jean-Luc Martinez

Director of Louvre Museum, Paris

Jean‐Luc Martinez is a renowned archeologist and scholar. He was appointed President‐Director of the Louvre in April 2013. He graduated from the Ecole Française in Athens and joined the Louvre staff as curator of cultural heritage in 1997. He was named Director of the department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities in 2007, overseeing the extensive renovation of the Greek antiquities galleries. Mr. Martinez curated the Galerie du Temps, the main gallery of Louvre‐Lens, the Louvre’s satellite museum in northern France. Under Jean‐Luc Martinez’s leadership, the Musée du Louvre recently inaugurated the « Pyramid » project and the Dominique‐Vivant Denon Resource Center, and has renovated the Pavilion de l’horloge (Clock Pavilion) dedicated to the history and the collections of the Louvre. Moreover, several projects reflect the museum’s ambition for going out to its public, at a national level with the Louvre Lens and the construction of the new museum storage area in Liévin in Northern France as well, but also on an international scale, with the recent opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum that aims to be the first universal museum of the 21st century. Mr. Martinez is a member of the High Council of the French Museums, of the Scientific CounsIl of the National Institute of the History of Art, and also serves on the Scientific Council of the Ecole Française of Athens and the Artistic Council of the National Museum. Mr. Martinez is also a professor at the Ecole du Louvre and teaches archaeology and art history of the ancient Greek world. In July 2015, Mr. Martinez was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Jean‐Luc Martinez is the editor of the report on the Protection of Cultural Heritage entitled “Fifty
Proposals to Protect the Cultural Heritage of Humanity”, requested by former President of the French Republic François Hollande, which advocates the safeguarding of endangered cultural heritage which fed into the French proposals presented to UNESCO and was then presented at the G7 Summit in Tokyo, in the presence of the G7 Heads of State.
